WORTH IT The best new thing at USJ — and it rides on the same entry ticket as Mario.

Donkey Kong Country is the strongest addition to USJ since Potter, and trip reports keep naming Mine Cart Madness the highlight of the whole park. Opened 11 December 2024 as the world's first Donkey Kong land, it expanded the Nintendo footprint by roughly 1.7× the size of the original Super Mario area — a jungle-temple canyon behind Mount Beanpole with one flagship coaster, a Power-Up Band rhythm game and the park's best theming per square metre. The catch is the same as next door: it sits inside the Super Nintendo World timed-entry zone, so the 08:45 app lottery, the kiosk fallback or an Express Pass with area guarantee (from ¥14,800 covering both areas) decides whether you see it at all.

A canyon, a coaster, and the best illusion in the park

What it is

USJ built the world's first Donkey Kong land and put one genuinely clever trick at the centre of it.

Mine Cart Madness is the flagship: a family coaster of about two minutes through golden-temple jungle, built around a leaping-track illusion — the cart appears to jump gaps in broken rails, exactly like the SNES game, via a track system Universal patented for this ride. It is not a thrill machine; it's a theming machine, and it works. Trip reports repeatedly name it the highlight of the entire park. Standby runs 90–240 minutes; a Single Rider line exists and routinely halves that.

Height rule: check the official page before promising a small child the ride — sources conflict (107 cm accompanied vs 122 cm flat appear in different official-adjacent listings). If your child is between those numbers, verify on usj.co.jp on the day rather than trusting any blog, including this one.

Rambi's Bongo Breakout is the second attraction — a Power-Up Band rhythm mini-game, which means it effectively requires the ¥4,000–5,000 band to play. With kids the band earns its money across both lands; without kids, watching the conga chaos is free. The land also runs DK-themed snacks and a small shop whose banana merchandise does unreasonable volume.

How to actually ride Mine Cart Madness without losing the day

Strategy

If you won a morning SNW slot: ride Mario Kart first (its queue builds fastest), then walk straight through to Donkey Kong Country while the morning crowd is still queueing Mario. Mine Cart standby is usually at its daily low before 11:00.

If you're on Single Rider: it's the free cheat code here — the ride loads awkwardly for groups, so the single line moves. A 180-minute board has been a 45–60 minute single-file reality in multiple reports.

If it's a peak date and DK is the point: Express 5 Race & Trolley from ¥16,800 ($107) is the only product that guarantees entry to both Nintendo areas and puts you on Mine Cart Madness without the standby line. The cheaper SNW-only Express tiers (¥12,800–18,900) don't all include the DK guarantee — read the variant name before paying. Or just pick a quieter date and keep the money.

Admission always; the guarantee only if your date is busy. Both areas ride on one timed-entry ticket, so one good morning covers Mario and DK together.

Donkey Kong Country questions

FAQPage schema paired
Is Donkey Kong Country open at Universal Studios Japan?

Yes — it opened 11 December 2024 as the world's first Donkey Kong land, expanding the Nintendo area by roughly 1.7× the original Super Mario section. It's fully operational: Mine Cart Madness, Rambi's Bongo Breakout, themed food and shop. Note that USJ's ticket booths closed permanently on 6 May 2025 — there is no walk-up window, so buy your park ticket online before you travel.

Do you need a separate ticket for Donkey Kong Country?

No separate ticket — but it sits inside the Super Nintendo World timed-entry zone, so you need the same free Area Timed Entry Ticket (app lottery around 08:45, gone in 15–20 seconds on busy days), the kiosk fallback, or an Express Pass whose variant guarantees both areas (from ¥14,800).

How long is the wait for Mine Cart Madness?

Standby posts 90–240 minutes on busy dates, but USJ boards over-estimate and Single Rider routinely halves the real wait. Quiet weekdays in late January–early March see it drop under an hour. Ride time is about 2 minutes — the leaping-track illusion is the payoff.

What is the height requirement for Mine Cart Madness?

⚠ Published sources conflict — 107 cm accompanied by an adult vs 122 cm flat appear in different listings. Check the official USJ attraction page on the day if your child is anywhere between 107 and 122 cm; don't plan the trip on a blog's number, including ours.

Is Donkey Kong Country worth it for adults without kids?

Yes — it's arguably the best-themed 90 minutes at USJ. Mine Cart Madness is gentle as a coaster but the illusion work and the canyon setting are the draw, and Single Rider keeps the time cost reasonable. Skip the ¥4,000–5,000 Power-Up Band unless the mini-games appeal.

Mario Kart or Mine Cart Madness first?

Mario Kart first — its queue builds fastest after opening, then walk through to Donkey Kong Country before 11:00 while Mine Cart standby is at its daily low. If you only care about DK, reverse it and use Single Rider on Mario Kart later.
