Umeda Sky or Harukas 300?
Pay for atmosphere, not altitude.

Quick answer · 30 sec
DEPENDS Umeda Sky for the experience. Harukas for height or rain. Never both.

Pick one — they cost nearly the same (¥2,000 for Umeda Sky, ¥2,200 for Harukas or ¥1,980 online) and doing both is paying twice for the same skyline. Umeda Sky Building wins for most people: its 173 m roof is genuinely open-air and the glass escalator crossing the void between the towers is the single best observatory moment in Osaka. Harukas 300 is 127 m higher and fully enclosed — the right call in rain, in summer heat, or if maximum altitude is the point. And if ¥2,000 feels steep for a city best seen from street level, the ¥1,000 ferris wheels see the same skyline for about half the price.

Nearly the same price, two philosophies

The two decks
WORTH IT The experience pick — wind, the void escalator, sunset over the Yodo.

Umeda Sky Building

A 1993 sci-fi landmark where the viewing is the event: glass elevator, an escalator suspended in open air between the two towers, then a fully open-air 360° roof at 173 m. Lower than Harukas and better anyway — no glass between you and the city, and the best sunset slot in Osaka. Weakness: wind or rain can close the roof. Full verdict →

DEPENDS The altitude pick — 300 m, enclosed, directly above Tennoji.

Harukas 300

Osaka's tallest building (no longer Japan's — Azabudai Hills took that in 2023) with a vast three-floor deck at 300 m. Climate-controlled, stroller-easy, zero transit if you're in Tennoji, and the only observatory that works in rain or a 37°C August afternoon. The trade: everything is behind glass, and the atmosphere is airport-lounge. Full verdict →

The third option

Osaka's skyline is a mid-tier sight. If you suspect ¥2,000 is too much for it, you're right — and the city agrees, at a discount.

HEP Five ferris wheel, ¥1,000 (free with the Amazing Pass) — the red wheel on the Umeda mall roof, boarding from the 7th floor, topping out at 106 m, three minutes from Osaka Station. The best value view in Kita, and air-conditioned gondolas beat an open roof in August.

Don Quijote Ebisu Tower wheel, ¥1,000 (¥100 off with the Amazing Pass) — the oblong wheel bolted to the Don Quijote on the Dotonbori canal. The best night wheel in the city, because you rotate directly above the neon and the Glico sign rather than looking at them from three kilometres away. Pair it with a Dotonbori dusk walk.

Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel, ¥1,000 — 112.5 m on the bayfront, free with the Amazing Pass, and the natural add-on to Kaiyukan next door. Bay sunsets over the container cranes are better than they sound.

Osaka Museum of History 10th floor, ¥600 admission — not a deck at all, but the museum's full-height window is arguably the single best view of Osaka Castle in the city, better than anything from inside the castle itself. It has a weekly closing day, so check before you go.

Which one are you?

Umeda Sky vs Harukas — the questions everyone asks

Straight answers
Which is better, Umeda Sky Building or Harukas 300?

Umeda Sky for the experience — a fully open-air roof at 173 m and the glass escalator between the towers. Harukas 300 for raw height (300 m) and weather-proofing. Nearly the same price either way (¥2,000 vs ¥2,200); most first-timers should pick Umeda Sky at sunset.

Is it worth doing both Umeda Sky and Harukas?

No — that's ¥4,200 at the counters (¥3,980 with Harukas booked online) for the same skyline from two angles. Pick one by weather and neighbourhood, then spend the difference on a ¥1,000 ferris wheel or a Himeji train ticket.

Which Osaka observatory is best in the rain?

Harukas 300, without question — it's fully enclosed across floors 58–60. Umeda Sky's Skywalk roof is open-air and can close outright in rain or high wind, leaving you with only the indoor 40th-floor level.

Which is better for sunset?

Umeda Sky — the west-facing roof looks straight down the Yodo River toward the bay, in open air. Arrive 45–60 minutes before sundown. Harukas faces the sunset through glass, which means reflections as soon as the interior lights come up.

Are Umeda Sky or Harukas covered by the Osaka Amazing Pass?

Umeda Sky is free with the pass only for entry before 15:00 — after that it's just 10% off, and sunset is exactly when you want to be there. Harukas 300 isn't included at all. Neither deck is a reason to buy the ¥3,500 pass by itself.

What's the cheapest good view in Osaka?

HEP Five's wheel at ¥1,000 (free with the Amazing Pass), three minutes from Osaka Station, or the Don Quijote wheel on the Dotonbori canal, also ¥1,000 — the best night option because the neon is directly beneath you. Grand Green Osaka's rooftop park behind Osaka Station is free.
