The ledger first: Expo 2025 ran 13 April to 13 October 2025 on Yumeshima and recorded 29,017,924 entries — but 3,438,938 of those were staff and pass holders, so general visitors came to 25,578,986, about 90% of the 28.2M target. Ticket sales reached 22.07M, and the organisers' December 2025 outlook put the operating surplus at up to ¥37bn — still a forecast, not final accounts. Set against that: the venue construction budget was reported at about ¥235bn, 88% over the original plan, and the traveller experience deteriorated as crowds grew through the summer. A Reddit thread titled "Osaka World expo is hot garbage" summed up the complaints that recurred in traveller posts: long unsheltered entry queues, lines for toilets and convenience stores, and long waits to reach the station platform at closing. The fair minority view, for the record: visitors who skipped the headline pavilions and went for the architecture — above all the Ring — often loved it.
What physically remains: about 200 metres of the north-eastern Grand Ring — the roughly 2 km-circumference wooden colossus that set the Guinness record for the largest wooden architectural structure — is preserved in near-original condition after a "Save the Ring" campaign, slated to anchor a future municipal memorial park. The rest was dismantled, with its timber earmarked for reuse — press reports include rebuilding in earthquake-damaged Suzu, Ishikawa. So the two claims you'll read — "they demolished the Ring" and "they saved the Ring" — are both wrong. One-tenth of it stands.
And Yumeshima itself: empty until 2030. Chūō Line service was slashed the day after closing and now runs at roughly 30% of Expo levels, with about every other train turning back at Cosmosquare. Two redevelopment concepts have been floated for the remaining land — an F1 circuit with arena, and a resort complex with water park — and no developer has been confirmed, so treat every "F1 is coming to Osaka" headline as a proposal, not a plan. The one certainty is MGM Osaka: Japan's first integrated casino resort, an MGM/ORIX build now costed at about ¥1.51 trillion after the September 2025 plan revision, with hotels, convention space and a casino, broke ground 24 April 2025 and opens autumn 2030. Until then, the correct amount of your itinerary to spend on Yumeshima is zero — spend it on the city or a day trip instead.
