Sumo in Osaka —
the real basho, or the show?
Osaka hosts a real top-division tournament once a year: the Grand Sumo Spring Tournament, every March at EDION Arena in Namba — 14–28 March in 2027. If your trip touches March, that's the answer — real rikishi, real stakes, and tickets that go fast once general sale opens (6 February 2027). Active wrestlers also visit on jungyo, the regional exhibition tour: in 2026 it reaches Osaka City on 17 October and Katano and Yao on 9–10 December. The rest of the time, what's on sale are sumo shows: staged demonstrations by retired wrestlers with audience challenges, photos and sometimes a chanko hot-pot lunch. They are exactly what they say they are — entertainment, not tournament sumo — and at that honest job they're good. Worth it for families and first-timers; skip them if you could be at the basho instead.
Tournament sumo and show sumo — don't pay for one expecting the other
Two different productsGetYourGuide owns this vertical in Osaka, and the inventory is genuinely good — as long as you read the labels.
The real thing: the Grand Sumo Spring Tournament — the Haru Basho — comes to EDION Arena Osaka, a short walk from Namba Station, for fifteen days every March. It's one of the six annual honbasho and the only one outside Tokyo, Nagoya and Fukuoka, which makes an Osaka March trip one of the easiest ways for a foreign visitor to see top-division sumo live. Tickets sell through the Japan Sumo Association's official channels only: the association bans resale, and resold tickets can be voided — if plans change, use its official face-value resale service. Fan-club and lottery presales come first; general sale for the 14–28 March 2027 basho opens on 6 February 2027, and the good seats go early. Seat prices are being revised from the January 2027 basho, so check the official price page rather than last year's figures. Where March falls in the Osaka calendar →
The exception to "March only": jungyo. Between tournaments, active wrestlers tour the regions staging exhibition bouts. In 2026 the tour stops in Osaka Prefecture three times: 17 October at Ookini Arena Maishima in Osaka City, 9 December in Katano and 10 December in Yao. It isn't tournament sumo, but it is today's rikishi, not retired ones.
The year-round product is different, and the honest operators say so: shows built around retired rikishi — demonstrations of the rituals and techniques, comedy bouts, audience-member challenges (you, in a padded sumo suit, against a former professional), photo sessions, and in the dinner-theatre versions a chanko-nabe meal, the wrestlers' own hot pot. Nobody is pretending this is a tournament. Judged as what it is — 90 minutes of genuinely skilled, genuinely funny cultural entertainment — it earns its ratings, especially with kids.

Sumo-in-Osaka questions people actually search
Straight answersCan you watch real sumo in Osaka?
Yes — for fifteen days every March (14–28 March in 2027), when the Grand Sumo Spring Tournament (Haru Basho) fills EDION Arena, a short walk from Namba Station. It's the only honbasho in Kansai; general sale opens about five weeks ahead (6 February for 2027) and weekends go first. Outside March, active wrestlers appear only on jungyo regional-tour exhibition days — in 2026, 17 October in Osaka City and 9–10 December in Katano and Yao. Everything else sold as 'sumo' is a show with retired wrestlers.
Are the Osaka sumo shows worth it?
For families and first-timers, yes — the headline show delivers 90 minutes of rituals, comedy bouts and an audience challenge against a former pro. Skip the shows only if your dates overlap the March basho — the real tournament beats any staged version.
Are the wrestlers in Osaka sumo shows real?
They're genuinely trained — retired professional rikishi, not actors — but they're no longer competing, and the bouts are demonstrations, not contests. The reputable operators state this plainly. If a show listing implies you're seeing tournament sumo outside March, that's your signal to book elsewhere.
What is chanko nabe?
The protein-heavy hot pot sumo stables cook daily to build wrestlers — chicken, fish, tofu and vegetables in broth, eaten communally in enormous quantities. Several Osaka sumo shows bundle a chanko meal with the performance, which is the most natural way to try it outside a stable.
How much are Grand Sumo tickets in Osaka?
Prices vary widely by seat type. For the March 2026 basho, chair seats ran ¥3,500–11,000 and a four-person Masu B box ¥40,000–42,000; the Japan Sumo Association is revising prices from the January 2027 basho, so check its official price page for March 2027. Buy only through official channels — resale is banned and resold tickets can be voided. General sale for March 2027 opens on 6 February 2027, and weekend sessions go first.
Where is EDION Arena Osaka?
In Namba — officially the Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium, a few minutes' walk from Namba Station, which puts the March basho closer to the main tourist base than any other honbasho venue in Japan. Pair a tournament day with dinner in Ura-Namba, three minutes from the Glico sign.
